PBS Membership Meeting

The next PBS membership meeting is scheduled for this Saturday, July 22nd at Char's Has The Blues, beginning at 8:30 pm. Appearing at Char's after the meeting will be Bad News Blues Band.

The August meeting will be held on Saturday, August 19th, at the Rhythm Room, with Sistah Blue providing the blues entertainment that night.

 

Discount for PBS members

The Celebrity Theatre is offering PBS members $5 off any ticket to see Jonny Lang in concert when"Phoenix Blues Society" is mentioned either at the box office or via phone orders. The show is scheduled for Tuesday, October 3rd at 8:00 pm. Regular prices are $45 and $37.50. The offer is valid until September 1st and does not apply to online sales.

 

Around Town

Sistah Blue is the featured entertainment for their CD release party at the Rhythm Room on Friday, July 21st.

George Bowman will bring his Soul Revue to the Rhythm Room on Saturday, July 22nd.

Jimmy Peyton's Midnite Blues is at 26th Street Blues, 2547 E. Indian School Rd., on Friday, July 21st, and at Pappadeux's Seafood Restaurant, 11501 N. Black Canyon Highway, on Saturday, July 22nd, 6:00 - 10:00 pm.

Cold Shott & The Hurricane Horns will be presenting a free concert at Superstition Springs Mall, Power Rd. & Southern Ave. in east Mesa, on Saturday, July 22nd from 7:00 until 9:00 pm.

Blind Ronnie's House of Blues is starting a weekly Thursday night gig on July 27th at the Redfish Cajun Grill & Bar, 7401 E. Frank Lloyd Wright in Scottsdale from 7:30 to 11:30 pm.

Bluzone will be heading up the road to Smokin' Harley's Steakhouse, 11255 S. Highway 69, Mayer, AZ on Saturday, July 22nd.

One Class Act is doing two nights in Prescott at the Bird Cage on Friday & Saturday, July 21st & 22nd. Showtime both nights is 9:30 pm.

Common Ground Blues Band is also heading north this weekend with a two-night stand at Charly's, in Flagstaff, on Friday & Saturday, July 21st & 22nd.

Guitarist Chris Duarte headlines a Tuesday night gig at the Rhythm Room on July 25th; doors open at 7:00 pm. Advance tickets are $12, available at the bar or from all Ticketmaster outlets (480-784-4444). Admission on the day of the show will be $14.

Tucson band in Europe

The Night Owls, who in the past has appeared in the Arizona Blues Showdown, is currently in Europe as part of the Arizona Jazz Academy, playing at both the Montreux and Vienne Jazz festivals. They will also play in Paris, France and Segovia, Spain.

 

In memoriam

Sam Myers, who appeared at two different Blues Blasts as well as numerous shows at the Rhythm Room with Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets, passed away last week at the age of 70 after a battle with throat cancer.

Phoenix saxophone legend Bernard Williams, an original member of influential soul pioneers Dyke & the Blazers, died on July 5th. Williams often played on the streets of Phoenix outside Chase Field (formerly Bank One Ballpark) and USAirways Center (formerly America West Arena). A memorial show is scheduled for the Rhythm Room on July 31st.

PBS Events

Mark your calendar now for Back Porch in the Pines, scheduled for September 30th at the beautiful new Pine Mountain Amphitheater in Flagstaff. The show, to be held from 11:00 am until 5:30 pm, will feature Dan Treanor and African Wind, Janiva Magness with Scotty Spenner, Eden Brent, Danny Rhodes, Grams & Krieger, and Soulcatcher. Ticket information and hotel packages will be released later.

The 16th annual Arizona Blues Showdown is scheduled for November 12th & 19th at the Rhythm Room. Entry forms and contest rules will be available in early September.
