PBS Membership Meeting

The August meeting will be held on Saturday, August 19th, at the Rhythm Room, with Sistah Blue providing the blues entertainment that night.

 

Discount for PBS members

The Celebrity Theatre is offering PBS members $5 off any ticket to see Jonny Lang in concert when "Phoenix Blues Society" is mentioned either at the box office or via phone orders. The show is scheduled for Tuesday, October 3rd at 8:00 pm. Regular prices are $45 and $37.50. The offer is valid until September 1st and does not apply to online sales.

 

Around Town

It's going to be a "Big" weekend at the Rhythm Room, with Big Nick & the Gila Monsters playing on Friday, August 4th, followed by Big Pete Pearson on Saturday, August 5th.

One Class Act has a very busy weekend, beginning with a Friday night gig at Uncle Bear's in Gilbert on August 4th at 9:00 pm. The band will be at the Spirit Room, in Jerome, on Saturday, August 5th from 2:00 until 6:00 pm, and then at Smokin' Harley's Steakhouse, 11255 S. Highway 69, Mayer, AZ on Saturday evening from 9:00 pm until 1:00 am.

Jimmy Peyton's Midnite Blues is at 26th Street Blues, 2547 E. Indian School Rd., on Friday, August 4th.

Cold Shott & The Hurricane Horns will be playing at Crown King Saloon on Saturday, August 5th from 9:00 pm until 12:30 am.

Bluzone is at Jay's Cocktails on Saturday, August 5th.


 

Blues Jams

New jam sessions around town include one hosted by Blind Ronnie's House of Blues every Thursday night at the Redfish Cajun Grill & Bar, 7401 E. Frank Lloyd Wright in Scottsdale from 7:30 to 11:30 pm, and Ray Ray and Hop Condit leading the jam every Thursday at the Roadrunner, I-17 at the New River Exit, from 6:00 to 10:00 pm.

The venerable Chico Chism, along with his band, The Flamekeepers, is still holding down the fort on Wednesday nights at the El Dorado Bar & Grill.

In memoriam

Jessie Mae Hemphill, who appeared at one of the early PBS events in 1991, passed away in Memphis at the age of 71.

Legendary pianist Floyd Dixon, 77, died on July 26th. Dixon had appeared earlier this summer at the Rhythm Room in a live recording session.

PBS Events

Mark your calendar now for Back Porch in the Pines, scheduled for September 30th at the beautiful new Pine Mountain Amphitheater in Flagstaff. The show, to be held from 11:00 am until 5:30 pm, will feature Dan Treanor and African Wind, Janiva Magness with Scotty Spenner, Eden Brent, Danny Rhodes, Grams & Krieger, and Soulcatcher. Ticket information and hotel packages will be released later.

The 16th annual Arizona Blues Showdown is scheduled for November 12th & 19th at the Rhythm Room. Entry forms and contest rules will be available in early September.
