The May meeting will be a social gathering at Tempe Beach Park on Thursday, May 12th, when Cold Shott & The Hurricane Horns will be performing from 6:00 until 8:00 pm in the Live @ the Lake series. The park is located on the south side of Tempe Town Lake at Mill Avenue and Rio Salado Pkwy. Look for the PBS sign to the west side of the stage.
A new place in town is Big Al's, located at 717 S. Central Avenue, (Grant Street), 1 1/2 blocks south of Bank One Ballpark. They've got live blues on Thursday nights, from 6:00 until 10:00 pm, with a jam hosted by Stephan Wilde. Saturday nights are rockabilly nights, with the Haymakers, featuring Mario Moreno, James Bailey and Pat Roberts, appearing on Saturday, May 21st from 9:00 pm until 1:00 am. The club phone number is 602-258-6900. Cold Shott & The Hurricane Horns is playing at Crazy Jim's Restaurant, 1401 E. Bell Rd., on Friday, May 13th and Saturday, May 14th from 8:30 pm until 12:30 am. The Cold Shott boys will be part of the Rockin' Blues and R&B Fest at the Longshot, 74th St. & McDowell in Scottsdale, from 3:00 pm until closing on Sunday, May 15th. Also on the show are Jim Glass Band, Hans Olson, Chuck Hall and more. The event will be broadcast live over the internet. Big Nick & the Gila Monsters are headed out of town on Saturday, May 14th to the Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenburg for a show from 7:00 until 9:30 pm. Call 928-684-2272 for more info. One Class Act has a whole slew of upcoming dates, with shows at CK's on Saturday, May 14th, at Skipper's Lounge on Friday, May 20th, and at Pappadeaux's Seafood Kitchen on Saturday, May 21st. They will also be one of many bands playing a benefit for Ronny Whitehead at Char's Has the Blues on Sunday, May 15th. Common Ground Blues will be at Skipper's Lounge on Saturday, May 21st. Shri will be performing at the "Music in May" concert series in Anthem on Saturday May 21st, from 7:15 - 9:15 pm in Anthem Community Park. Sistah Blue is at the Rhythm Room on Friday, May 20th.

The annual Silver City Blues Festival is scheduled for May 27-29 in Silver City, New Mexico. Among the national acts appearing will be The Holmes Brothers, David "Honeyboy" Edwards, Sherman Robertson, and Paul Geremia. Arizona acts on the bill include Sistah Blue, The Night Owls, and Stefan George and the Conrads. The next big PBS event will be our annual Back Porch Blues, scheduled for Sunday, August 28th at the Rhythm Room. Appearing will be Fat Possum recording artist Robert Belfour. Other acts and complete details will be available later.
The Rhythm Room has a host of special events coming your way soon, with Rod Piazza & the Mighty Flyers appearing on Friday, May 13th, followed the next night by a double fill featuring Rumble King and The Fremonts. Guitar wizard Eric Sardinas comes to the Rhythm Room on Wednesday, May 18th, with advance tickets for that show at $12 each available at the bar or from all Ticketmaster outlets (480-784-4444). Evening Star presents jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan at the Rhythm Room on Wednesday, May 11th at 7:30 pm. Advance tickets are $22.50, available at the bar or from all Ticketmaster outlets (480-784-4444). Another jazz legend, Mose Allison, is appearing at Johnny's Uptown on Sunday, May 15th beginning at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $22; call 602-277-5999 for info and reservations.
