PBS Membership Meeting

The June meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 9th, at Minder Binders, McClintock & University in Tempe, beginning at 7:30 pm. Appearing that night will be Jimmy Peyton's Midnite Blues. The music starts at 7:00 pm, so come early for dinner. There is a small cover charge for the music, with proceeds going to the band.

New Blues Venue

A new Phoenix location for blues is Fifth Avenue Cafe, located at 501 W. Thomas Rd. in Phoenix. They will be having music on Friday nights from 8:00 pm until closing time. Look for Paris James to be playing at Fifth Avenue Cafe for the next few weeks. Owner David Charns reports that he is "trying to create a nice comfortable place for music." In Concert

Blues harmonica player extraordinaire Charlie Musselwhite is appearing at the Rhythm Room on Thursday, May 20th, beginning at 8:00 pm. Opening the show will be Mr. Boogie Woogie. This is a non-smoking show. Tickets on the day of the show are $23.

PBS favorite Johnny Rawls returns to town on Friday, May 28th, beginning at 9:00 pm, for the first time since his great appearance at Blues Blast 2004. He'll be at the Rhythm Room that evening.

Legendary singer / songwriter J.J. Cale will appear at the Kerr Cultural Center in Scottsdale on Tuesday, June 1st at 8:00 pm. Ticket information is at www.acousticmusicaz.com.

 

Around Town

Don't miss the Chico Chism Birthday Party, being held at the Rhythm Room on Saturday, May 22nd. Host band will be the Rocket 88s. Showtime is at 9:00 pm.

The Wednesday night blues series at Minder Binders, in Tempe, has changed to an earlier starting time. Appearing each Wednesday night from 7:00until 11 pm is Jimmy Peyton's Midnite Blues.

Cold Shott & the Hurricane Horns featuring Small Paul will be at the Bar Nun on Friday, May 21st from 9:00 pm until closing time. The band will also be part of a Chili Supper and blues show on Sunday, May 23rd, beginning at 6:30 pm at the Phoenix Public Library, 1221 N. Central, Phoenix. Proceeds benefit "Kids Read," to help buy books for Central Phoenix kids. Call 602-266-4514 for more info.

Loose Cannons Blues Band will be at Copper Canyon Brewing & Ale House, 5945 W. Ray Rd., Chandler (SE Corner of Ray & Kyrene), from 9:00 pm to 1:00 am on Saturday, May 22nd, and at Pappadeaux Seafood Restaurant, 11051 N. Black Canyon Hwy, north of Peoria Road on the I-17 frontage road, on Friday evening, May 28th.

Lil' Debbie & Blue Plate Special hits the outdoor stage at Pappadeaux's for shows on Saturday, May 22nd and again on Friday, June 4th.

Hans Olson plays every Thursday this month at the 33 American Bistro in Scottsdale from 6:00 until 9:00 pm. Hans will also be appearing with his band at the AIDS benefit at the Sail Inn in Tempe on Sunday, May 23rd from 6:00 until 7:00 pm. Finally, look for Hans at Sugar Daddy's on Sunday, May 30th from 1:00 until 6:00 pm.

Friday, May 21st - "PBS Members Free" night at the Rhythm Room. Appearing will be Jackie Payne / Steve Edmondson. Bring your friends --- new members joining at the door can get in free, too.

Sunday, August 22nd - Back Porch Blues (our yearly celebration of traditional blues featuring national and local blues artists) - Headline artists will be David "Honeyboy" Edwards and Alvin Youngblood Hart. Other details will be announced soon.

Arizona Blues Showdown dates (Acts from all around the state compete each year through PBS for the chance to be selected as the Arizona representative in each division for the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge, held in Memphis, Tennessee)
Sunday, September 19th -  (Solo/Duo division) - applications and rules to be available soon.
Sunday, November 7th & 14th
- Arizona Blues Showdown (Band division) - applications and rules available in August. Qualifying rounds will be held on 11/7 with the Finals on 11/14.

Sunday, February 27th - Blues Blast 2005 (An annual PBS event for 13 consecutive years and the first outdoor blues festival of the calendar year.
