Blues Blast announcement!

Little Charlie and the NightcatsLittle Charlie and the Nightcats (pictured at right) and Arkansas guitarist Michael Burks are the latest national acts  confirmed for Blues Blast 2005, in addition to headliner Bettye LaVette. Local blues legend Hans Olson will be one of the Arizona-based acts on the show.

Ms. Lavette was just named "Best Female Blues Artist" in the latest issue of Living Blues magazine, while Burks was heralded as the "Most Outstanding Musician - Guitar" in the same publication.

Other acts for Blues Blast 2005, scheduled for the Mesa Amphitheatre on Sunday, February 27th, will be announced soon. Ticket information will be available later in the year.

 

PBS Membership Meeting

The October membership meeting will be held at the Rhythm Room on Saturday, October 23rd, beginning at 8:00 pm. We expect the weather to be perfect that night, so we'll meet on the patio under the awning. Barbeque will be available, and PBS members attending the meeting will get a discount to see Chicago blues great Lil' Ed right after the meeting. More details in the next Blues News Online.

 

 

Around Town

Lil' Debbie & Blue Plate Special will be at Pappadeux Seafood Restaurant, 11501 N. Black Canyon Highway in Phoenix from 6:00 until 10:00 pm on Friday, October 8th.

Honeyboy Dupree & the Smokehouse Players will be at Pappadeux Seafood Restaurant the following evening, Saturday, October 9th from 6:00 until 10:00 pm.

Loose Cannons Blues Band are playing at Skipper's Lounge on Friday, October 15th from 9:30 pm until 1:30 am. Several Loose Cannons are also part of a rockabilly ensemble called The Haymakers; these hepcats will be at Schmedly's, in Scottsdale, on Friday, October 8th.

Cold Shott & The Hurricane Horns are at Bar Nun on Saturday, October 9th beginning at 9:00 pm. The band will host the Nello's Pizza Octoberfest on Friday, October 15th from 7:00 until 11:00 pm; this event will be at the Nello's location at 2950 S. Alma School Rd. in Mesa. Rounding out the Cold Shott schedule will be a Rhythm Room gig on Saturday, October 16th.

Big Nick & The Gila Monsters appear at the Wrigley Mansion in Phoenix on Friday, October 8th from 8:00 pm until midnight.

The J Powers Band will be at Philthy Phil's on Friday, October 8th from 9:30 pm until 1:30 am.

Common Ground Blues Band are at Skipper's Lounge on Saturday, October 9th, then will be recording a live album at Charly's, in Flagstaff, on Saturday, October 16th.

The Fifth Avenue Cafe, 501 W. Thomas in Phoenix, is now a shuttle stop for First Fridays and the Art Walk, with Paris James playing each week. Call the Cafe at (602) 274-0963 for dates and times.

Buzz and the Soul Senders have a pair of weekend gigs in Tucson, playing at Nimbus Brewery on Friday, October 8th at 8:00 pm and at Boondocks Lounge on Saturday, October 9th at 9:00 pm. The band from Bisbee will then cross the border into New Mexico on Sunday, October 10th for a 5:00 pm appearance at the La Vina Wine Festival in La Union, NM.

Speaking of the city of Bisbee, the Oklahoma blues legend, DC Minner will be in Arizona on Friday & Saturday, October 8th & 9th. Minner and his band will be appearing at St. Elmo's in Bisbee.

 

 

PBS Events

Arizona Blues Showdown dates (Acts from all around the state compete each year through PBS for the chance to be selected as the Arizona representative in each division for the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge, held in Memphis, Tennessee)
Sunday, November 7th & 14th - Arizona Blues Showdown  -  Qualifying rounds will be held on 11/7 with the Finals on 11/14. Check the PBS website to download your copy in MS Word format, or send e-mail if you would like the information mailed to you.

Sunday, February 27th - Blues Blast 2005 (An annual PBS event for 13 consecutive years and the first outdoor blues festival of the calendar year. Upcoming Festivals

The annual Fall Festival in Patagonia will be held on Saturday, October 9th. Local favorites Uvon Brooks and Big Mike Simpson will be appearing as a duo from 2:30 until 3:30.

The Tucson Blues Festival is scheduled for Sunday, October 17th from 11:00 am until 9:00 pm. Acts include R.J. Mischo, Doug MacLeod, Heather Hardy, Lisa Otey and Kathleen Williamson, Amazing Blues Wizards featuring Uvon, Valiants, Tommy Tucker, Night Owls, and the Tucson Magnet High School Blues Band.
