PBS Membership Meeting

The September membership meeting will be held at the Rhythm Room on Sunday, September 19th beginning at 7:00 pm. Right after the meeting will be the Sunday Showcase, hosted by One Class Act and featuring many other local blues bands. Proceeds from the door ($5 cover charge) go to support the musicians, always a noble cause.

We will also announcing the first acts scheduled for next year's Blues Blast 2005 during the meeting.

 

Upcoming Festivals

The annual Fall Festival in Patagonia will be held on Saturday, October 9th. Local favorites Uvon Brooks and Big Mike Simpson will be appearing as a duo from 2:30 until 3:30.

The Tucson Blues Festival is scheduled for Sunday, October 17th. More details as they are available.

 

In Concert

John Hammond, who is always worth seeing when he comes to town, will be at the Rhythm Room tonight (Sunday, September 12th). Opening this non-smoking show will be Scotty Spenner. Music starts at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $17.

Jonny Lang will be appearing in concert at the Celebrity Theatre on Thursday, September 16th at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $45, $37.50 and $30, and will go on sale on July 26th at the Celebrity Theatre box office or online at their web site. SPECIAL OFFER: Phoenix Blues Society members can get a $5 discount by showing your membership card when purchasing the tickets (valid only for tickets bought at the Celebrity Theatre box office either in advance or on the day of the show).

The legendary B.B. King comes to town on September 17th for a concert at the Dodge Theatre in downtown Phoenix. Check their website for more info.

 

Around Town

A benefit jam for the late Bucko Reed is scheduled for Monday, September 13th at the Rhythm Room. $5 donation goes to the family's funeral fund. Appearing will be many of the Valley's top blues and jazz artists. This will be a smoke-free show.

They'll be pitching a boogie woogie at the Rhythm Room to celebrate its 13th anniversary on Saturday, September 18th beginning at 8:30 pm. Appearing will be Henry Gray,
Big Pete Pearson Blues Band,  Chief w/ The Rhythm Room All-Stars & Paris James, Chico Chism
and Bob Corritore. It will also be the Chief's 80th birthday. Admission is $10.

Common Ground Blues Band play at the Gold Canyon Yacht Club on Saturday, September 18th.

The next Sunday Showcase, hosted by One Class Act, will be at the Rhythm Room on Sunday evening, September 19th at 8:00 pm. Admission is $5.

Lil' Debbie & Blue Plate Special will be at Pappadeux Seafood Restaurant, 11501 N. Black Canyon Highway in Phoenix from 6:00 until 10:00 pm on Friday, September 24th.

Honeyboy Dupree & the Smokehouse Players will be at Pappadeux Seafood Restaurant the following evening, Saturday, September 25th from 6:00 until 10:00 pm.

Loose Cannons Blues Band will be at Copper Canyon Brewing & Ale House, 5945 W. Ray Rd., Chandler (SE Corner of Ray & Kyrene), from 9:00 pm to 1:00 am on Friday, September 24th.

The Hank Tomlin Band is playing at Sundance's in Prescott on Friday, September 17th and Saturday, September 18th.

New Orleans blues band Rockin' Jake Band will make a rare Arizona appearance at the Bird Café in Prescott on Sunday, September 19th from 3-7 p.m. the club phone number is 928-778-9921.
 

 

PBS Events

Arizona Blues Showdown dates (Acts from all around the state compete each year through PBS for the chance to be selected as the Arizona representative in each division for the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge, held in Memphis, Tennessee)
NOTE: By request of the blues community, we are reverting to the original format of the Arizona Blues Showdown and having only one contest for all acts. There will be no separate Solo/Duo competition on September 19th. Instead, all acts will be participating in the contest in November.

Sunday, November 7th & 14th - Arizona Blues Showdown  -  Qualifying rounds will be held on 11/7 with the Finals on 11/14. Check the PBS website to download your copy in MS Word format, or send e-mail if you would like the information mailed to you.

Sunday, February 27th - Blues Blast 2005 (An annual PBS event for 13 consecutive years and the first outdoor blues festival of the calendar year.
