PBS Membership Meeting

The September membership meeting will be announced in the next issue of Blues News Online.

 

Upcoming Festivals

The first Flagstaff Blues and Boogie Fest is scheduled for Saturday, August 28th at the Orpheum Theatre, 15 West Aspen in Flagstaff, beginning at 8:00 pm. Scheduled to perform will be Cold Shott & the Hurricane Horns featuring Small Paul, The Hank Tomlin Band, and Hans Olson. Tickets are $12 each. For more info, contact the Orpheum Theatre at 928-556-1580. This special event is being filmed for future DVD release.

 

In Concert

John Hiatt will be appearing with David Lindley in a show at The Venue of Scottsdale on Saturday, September 4th. Advance tickets, available from Ticketmaster (480-784-4444), are $33.50; the price on the day of the show is $35.00. SPECIAL OFFER: Phoenix Blues Society members can get a $5 discount at the door by showing your membership card when purchasing the tickets.

Jonny Lang will be appearing in concert at the Celebrity Theatre on Thursday, September 16th at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $45, $37.50 and $30, and will go on sale on July 26th at the Celebrity Theatre box office or online at their web site. SPECIAL OFFER: Phoenix Blues Society members can get a $5 discount by showing your membership card when purchasing the tickets (valid only for tickets bought at the Celebrity Theatre box office either in advance or on the day of the show).

The 5th Avenue Cafe presents The Blues Caravan Showcase on Friday, August 27th, featuring Bob Corritore, The Chief, Ronnie Whitehead, Paris James and Chico Chism. Showtime is at 9:00 pm, and the cover charge is a ridiculously low $3. The 5th Avenue Cafe is located at located at 501 W. Thomas Rd. in Phoenix. Call them at (602) 274-0963 for more information.

The legendary B.B. King comes to town on September 17th for a concert at the Dodge Theatre in downtown Phoenix. Check their website for more info.

 

Around Town

The next Sunday Showcase, hosted by One Class Act, will be at the Rhythm Room this Sunday evening, August 28th at 8:00 pm. In addition to the host band, other acts include Poppy and the Usual Suspects,  Hard Landing Blues Band and Thermal Blues Express, with special guest appearances by Chico Chism and Walkin' Cane Mark.

Poppy and the Usual Suspects will be appearing at Pat Murphy's on Friday, August 27th and Saturday, August 28th.

The J. Powers Band plays at Philthy Phil's on Friday, August 27th. No cover charge.

Lil' Debbie & Blue Plate Special will be at Copper Canyon Brewing & Ale House, 5945 W. Ray Rd., Chandler (SE Corner of Ray & Kyrene), from 9:00 pm to 1:00 am on Friday, August 27th.

Common Ground Blues Band play at the Gold Canyon Yacht Club on Friday, August 27th.

Buzz and the Soul Senders will be at Char's Has the Blues on Friday, August 27th, and then the next night in Tucson at the French Quarter. While in Tucson the band will be in the studio recording tunes for their upcoming CD.

Cold Shott & the Hurricane Horns featuring Small Paul are appearing at the Rhythm Room on Saturday, September 4th beginning around 9:00 pm. There will be a special guest appearance by legendary singer Jerry Lawson, formerly of the Persuasions.

Many thanks to everyone who attended last Sunday's Back Porch Blues showcase at the Rhythm Room as well as the Sunday afternoon guitar workshop with Alvin Youngblood Hart. Both events were a huge success. As always, special thanks to the Arizona Commission on the Arts for their support.

Arizona Blues Showdown dates (Acts from all around the state compete each year through PBS for the chance to be selected as the Arizona representative in each division for the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge, held in Memphis, Tennessee)
Sunday, September 19th -  (Solo/Duo division) - applications and rules are now available. Check the PBS website to download your copy in MS Word format, or send e-mail if you would like the information mailed to you. HURRY --- the deadline for entries is coming up in about two weeks!!!

Sunday, November 7th & 14th - Arizona Blues Showdown (Band division) - applications and rules available soon. Qualifying rounds will be held on 11/7 with the Finals on 11/14. Check the PBS website to download your copy in MS Word format, or send e-mail if you would like the information mailed to you.

Sunday, February 27th - Blues Blast 2005 (An annual PBS event for 13 consecutive years and the first outdoor blues festival of the calendar year.
