PBS Membership Meeting

The August meeting will be held on Thursday, August 19th, at the Rhythm Room, beginning at 7:30 pm. At 8:00 pm that night will be the annual Harmonica Showcase hosted by Bill Tarsha and the Rocket 88s and featuring over 20 harp players.

 

In Concert

Four of our Valley blues greats (Chico Chism, The Chief, Paris James and Bob Corritore) will appear in concert on Thursday, August 19th beginning at 7:00 pm at the West Valley Art Museum (Bell Rd. & 114th Ave. in Surprise). John Hiatt will be appearing with David Lindley in a show at The Venue of Scottsdale on Saturday, September 4th. Advance tickets, available from Ticketmaster (480-784-4444), are $33.50; the price on the day of the show is $35.00. SPECIAL OFFER: Phoenix Blues Society members can get a $5 discount at the door by showing your membership card when purchasing the tickets.

Jonny Lang will be appearing in concert at the Celebrity Theatre on Thursday, September 16th at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $45, $37.50 and $30, and will go on sale on July 26th at the Celebrity Theatre box office or online at their web site. SPECIAL OFFER: Phoenix Blues Society members can get a $5 discount at the door by showing your membership card when purchasing the tickets (valid only for tickets bought at the Celebrity Theatre box office on the day of the show).

Sun Station, in Benson, Arizona, will be hosting a double bill on Friday, August 13th beginning around 7:00 pm. Appearing will be Rastus Kain & the Blame and Rocky "The Harp" Perryman & Danny Abarr. This concert is FREE!

The 5th Avenue Cafe presents The Blues Caravan Showcase on Friday, August 27th, featuring Bob Corritore, The Chief, Ronnie Whitehead, Paris James and Chico Chism. Showtime is at 9:00 pm, and the cover charge is a ridiculously low $3. The 5th Avenue Cafe is located at located at 501 W. Thomas Rd. in Phoenix. Call them at (602) 274-0963 for more information.

The legendary B.B. King comes to town on September 17th for a concert at the Dodge Theatre in downtown Phoenix. Check their website for more info.

 

Around Town

Cold Shott & the Hurricane Horns featuring Small Paul are appearing at the Rhythm Room on Friday, August 13th beginning around 9:00 pm.

Loose Cannons Blues Band will be at Copper Canyon Brewing & Ale House, 5945 W. Ray Rd., Chandler (SE Corner of Ray & Kyrene), from 9:00 pm to 1:00 am on Saturday, August 14th, and at Pappadeux Seafood Restaurant, 11501 N. Black Canyon Highway in Phoenix from 6:00 until 10:00 pm. on Saturday, August 21st.

The J. Powers Band plays at Philthy Phil's for the next three Fridays (August 13th, 20th & 27th). No cover charge.

Lil' Debbie & Blue Plate Special will be at Pappadeux Seafood Restaurant, 11501 N. Black Canyon Highway in Phoenix on Friday, August 20th at  from 6:00 until 10:00 pm. Common Ground Blues Band play at the Gold Canyon Yacht Club on Friday, August 27th.

Buzz and the Soul Senders return from a brief vacation to play at Char's Has the Blues on Friday, August 27th. The band is hitting the studio soon with an expected CD release in October.

 

Miscellaneous Blues News

The International Songwriting Competition is now accepting entries for 2004. In addition to the cash and prizes, winners will benefit from a multilateral promo campaign designed to give them maximum exposure for their music. Enter the ISC online or download an entry form to mail in your entry. Enter ISC by August 31, 2004 and save on multiple-song entries.

 

Upcoming Festivals

The first Flagstaff Blues and Boogie Fest is scheduled for Saturday, August 28th at the Orpheum Theatre, 15 West Aspen in Flagstaff, beginning at 8:00 pm. Scheduled to perform will be Cold Shott & the Hurricane Horns featuring Small Paul, The Hank Tomlin Band, and Hans Olson. Tickets are $12 each. PBS Events

Alvin Youngblood Hart
Alvin Youngblood Hart

The Phoenix Blues Society will be hosting a special instructional, interactive blues workshop with internationally-renowned blues guitarist Alvin Youngblood Hart on Sunday, August 22nd from 2:00 pm until 3:30 pm. Tickets for this unique event will be limited in order to make it a personally-enriching experience for all participants. The tickets are being offered first to PBS members and friends, so please reply promptly to ensure your place at the workshop.

Admission to the workshop will be $15 for PBS members and $20 for non-members. Members may purchase a combined ticket for the workshop and that evening's Back Porch Blues showcase for $25. Send e-mail to the Phoenix Blues Society to reserve your place at this event.

Participants should bring their own guitars to the workshop. The event is being held at the Holiday Inn, 4321 N. Central Ave. in Phoenix.

Sunday, August 22nd - Back Porch Blues (our yearly celebration of traditional blues featuring national and local blues artists) - Headline artists will be David "Honeyboy" Edwards and Alvin Youngblood Hart. Also appearing will be Bill Tarsha & Buddy Reed, Scotty Spenner, Uvon & the Amazing Blues Wizards, and Ken Tucker & James Swafford. Showtime will be at 6:00 pm; doors open at 5:00. This will be a non-smoking show. Advance tickets are $12 at the Rhythm Room or from Ticketmaster (480-784-4444). Tickets on the day of the show will be $15 ($12 for PBS members).

Arizona Blues Showdown dates (Acts from all around the state compete each year through PBS for the chance to be selected as the Arizona representative in each division for the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge, held in Memphis, Tennessee)

Sunday, November 7th & 14th - Arizona Blues Showdown (Band division) - applications and rules available soon. Qualifying rounds will be held on 11/7 with the Finals on 11/14.

Sunday, February 27th - Blues Blast 2005 (An annual PBS event for 13 consecutive years and the first outdoor blues festival of the calendar year.
