membership meeting:
The October meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 8th, beginning at 7:30 pm, at the Rhythm Room. Appearing that evening will be the Tommy Castro Band. -------------- Around town: A show NOT to be missed will feature Marcia Ball, who hasn't appeared in the Valley in at least 10 years. The Alligator recording artist will be at the Rhythm Room on Thursday, September 18th. Opening will be Lisa Otey and Mr. Boogie Woogie. Showtime is at 8 pm. Advance tickets are $20, available at the Rhythm Room or from Ticketmaster (480-784-4444); day of show price is $23. Cold Shott & the Hurricane Horns featuring Small Paul will be appearing at the grand opening of the Northern Lounge this Friday & Saturday, September 19th & 20th, beginning both nights at 9 pm. The Northern Lounge is located at 5008 W. Northern Ave. in Glendale. Honey Boy Dupree is appearing with Big Mack Mason and Landon at Barcelona in Chandler on Thursday, September 18th, beginning at 6 pm. Call 480-785-9004 for directions and more info. The whole Smokehouse Players band will be back together for a Saturday night gig on September 20th at Pappadeaux's, beginning at 6 pm. It's scheduled for outdoors, so call 602-331-3434 to confirm the show in case of bad weather. Thermal Blues Express play at the North Star Restaurant & Lounge, 3329 E. Bell Rd., from 8 until 10 pm on Friday, September 19th. The following weekend the TBE boys are headed south to play at the Frog & Firkin in Tucson on Friday, September 26th, and then at the Sun Station Blues Festival (see details below) on Saturday, September 27th. Lil' Debbie & Blue Plate Special will be playing a two-night gig at Everett's Steakhouse & Blues Club in Scottsdale on September 26 & 27th. Big Nick & the Gila Monsters play the next two Fridays, September 19th & 26th, at Char's Has the Blues, both nights from 9 pm until 1 am. Loose Cannons Blues Band is appearing at Monroe's, 3 W. Monroe St., on Friday, September 19th., then at the Amvets, 3805 S. 16th St. in Phoenix on Sunday, September 28th beginning at 7 pm. -------------------- Upcoming blues festivals: Sun Station Blues Festival is happening on Saturday, September 27th at Sun Station in Cascabel (which is way down a few miles of dirt road in the boondocks north of Benson). Headlining are Bo Diddley and Bad Little Doggie (featuring former members of the Allman Brothers). Also on the bill are Midnite Blues, Hans Olson, Thermal Blues Express, Front Row, Common Ground Blues, Blind Dog Cooley, and Three Legged Dog with Rocky Perryman. Tickets are $50 including dinner & camping. Trailers and motor homes are also welcome and will be parked outside the concert area; there are no hookups but camping is free. Check out this link for more info --- http://www.sunstation.org. ------------------ Good news from an old friend: Former Valley musician and PBS member Steve Cheseborough, along with his partner The Mississippi Spoonman, won the 2003 Sonny Boy Blues Society Battle of the Bands in Helena, Arkansas. The duo will now be eligible to compete in next January's International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Besides being a musician, Cheseborough is the author of the guidebook Blues Traveling: the Holy Sites of Delta Blues (University Press of Mississippi). He also is the host and music director of "Blues Breaks," a Mississippi ETV production to air nationally Sept. 28-Oct. 4 in conjunction with the PBS series "The Blues." And he spoke and performed in the recent documentary film Last of the Mississippi Jukes by Robert Mugge. ------------------ In the press: Phoenix area guitarist J.D. Simo was featured in a recent article by regular feature writer Serene Dominic in New Times. The feature is online on the New Times web site. ------------------ Coming to your TV set: The long-awaited Public Broadcasting series, The Blues, starts on September 28th. Click on the banner at the top of the page for info on the series, as well as for a schedule of live chats with blues artists starting this week on WashingtonPost.com. ------------------

PBS Upcoming Events: Don't miss the first ever Solo/Duo division contest of the Arizona Blues Showdown, being held this Sunday, September 21st, at the Rhythm Room, from 1 until 6 pm. Admission is only $5, $4 for PBS members. The Preliminary round will begin at 1 pm, with the top four acts being selected to compete in the Final round beginning at 4:30 pm. The winning act will be entitled to represent Arizona in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in late January.The schedule for the Preliminary round is: 1:00 The Dok and Gal Show Please let your friends know about this fun event. There will be everything from guitar/harmonica duos to solo keyboard acts to solo drum performances, and a lot of other great blues. The Band contest for the Arizona Blues Showdown is scheduled for November 9th & 16th. Rules and applications for this competition can also be downloaded from the PBS web site.Blues Blast 2004 is scheduled for Sunday, February 22, 2004 at the Mesa Amphitheatre. We expect to be able to announce a few of the national acts by the next Blues News Online. ----------------- Help from our members: It's the time of year to start making serious plans for Blues Blast 2004, scheduled for next February 22nd.
