PBS membership meeting:

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 12th, beginning at 7:00 pm at the Rhythm Room. Following the meeting will be a special concert featuring British blues/rock legends Savoy Brown, beginning at 8:00 pm. There will be a discount for any PBS member who wishes to stay for the show. Please note: our meeting will start 30 minutes earlier than normal due to the starting time of the concert.

Savoy Brown recently signed a recording contract with Blind Pig Records. Their 30th album, Strange Dreams, is expected to be released on February 4th.

Around town:

For those of who in the East Valley looking for a place to hear blues, check out Iguana Mac's, located at 1371 N. Alma School in Chandler. Appearing there this Saturday, January 18th, will be Cold Shott & the Hurricane Horns featuring Small Paul. For more info, call Iguana Mac's at 480-899-6735.

Cold Shott will also be doing two special gigs at the Rhythm Room in the next week, hosting a Soul Singer Showcase, with 15 guest vocalists, on Sunday, January 19th. Then, they'll be celebrating the release of their new CD on Friday, January 24th. For more info, check the Rhythm Room site.

Monroe's is hosting a special evening of blues this Friday, January 17th, with Chico Chism, The Chief, Paris James & Bob Corritore, and others.

If you're heading to Tucson during the weekend, check out the special show at the Berger Performing Arts Center featuring Lisa Otey and the Desert Divas. Show times are at 3:00 and 8:00 pm on Saturday, January 18th. Advance tickets are $17, available at Antigone Books (4th Ave./7th St.), Enchanted Earthworks (Ft. Lowell/Swan), Brew & Vine (Oracle/Orange Grove), CD City (Campbell/Glenn), online at www.dotucson.com/tickets and by calling 520-297-9133. All seats are reserved. If there are seats remaining on the day of the concert, they will be available for $20 at the door.

One of Seattle's hottest blues bands, Nick Vigarino and his Mean Street Blues Band, is coming to Char's Has The Blues on Saturday, January 25th.

Our old friends, the Lynwood Flyers, will be holding down the weekend gig at Warsaw Wally's on January 24th and 25th.

Hans Olson has a full schedule this month, with way too many shows to mention. One of the most interesting is the special Acoustic Blues Showcase at the Rhythm Room on Thursday, January 23rd, with Scotty Spenner, Morgan City General, Uvon & Mike Simpson, Paris James & Bob Corritore, and Jack Straw.

Pictures of blues:

A book of classic blues photos, Juke Joint, is now back in print and available from the University Press of Mississippi. The pictures is this collection were taken at various locations in the Mississippi Delta during the 1980s. While out of print, rare copies of this special book were selling for close to $1,000, but it's now available for $55 (hardcover) and $35 (paperback). PBS Upcoming Events:

Sunday, February 23

Blues Blast 2003, 11 am - 6 pm, at the Mesa Amphitheatre. Headlining the show will be The Holmes Brothers. Also appearing will be San Francisco-based act Tommy Castro Band. Other acts on the bill are soulful singer Trudy Lynn, dynamic blues guitarist/singer Roy Gaines & the Rhythm Room All-Stars with special guest Mr. Boogie Woogie, Bad News Blues Band, Midnite Blues, and Paris James.

Tickets for Blues Blast 2003 are now on sale. Specially priced tickets for PBS members and their friends are available directly from the Phoenix Blues Society for $13 each; you may purchase these special advance tickets at the upcoming membership meeting. That's a discount from the regular advance price of $15, and all service charges are waived. Buy as many as you like.

If you'd like to order the special $13 tickets by mail, just send a check or money order to the Phoenix Blues Society, P.O. Box 36874, Phoenix, AZ. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your order.

If not purchased directly through the Phoenix Blues Society, advance tickets are available from the Mesa Amphitheatre box office (480-644-2560) and all Ticketmaster outlets.
